Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pelvic floor therapy is a specialty area focusing on the rehabilitation of muscles in the pelvic floor. This can include any dysfunction of the bladder, bowel, or sexual health systems related to injuries, pregnancy, childbirth, and more. When these muscles aren’t working as they should, they can cause pain and other symptoms that interfere with daily functioning. Pelvic floor therapy can help ease pain and associated symptoms, getting you back to normal functioning.

  • The initial evaluation is always one-on-one and typically 75-90 minutes long. This is an important individualized time for us to really get to know each other. The initial evaluation is where you get an opportunity to review not only why you are here, but your personal history and all the events, past treatments, and your own thoughts about why you are having this problem. After our initial conversation, I will perform a standard OT evaluation "screen" of breath, posture, movement, strength, flexibility, balance, and pain. If warranted and with your consent, there may be an internal pelvic evaluation to determine the cause of pain, weakness, or incoordination of the muscles causing dysfunction in your pelvic floor. A thorough explanation of the exam will be provided and we will only proceed with the internal exam when appropriate and with written and verbal consent. Please note: the exam can be stopped at any time and you are welcome to bring someone with you to be present during the examination. After the evaluation is complete, we will discuss the findings and determine a plan of action to help you reach your goals.

  • Initially, no. Eventually, yes. We can have our initial evaluation without an occupational therapy referral or a pelvic floor referral (otherwise known as a prescription). Following our initial evaluation, a prescription will be required to continue care. We can discuss this more in detail on the phone or at the first visit should you have any questions.

  • Occupational therapists are trained to assess the whole person including your environment, what is most meaningful to you, and the activities of your daily life. These factors all combine to impact your body’s ability to function and participate in life at your optimal capacity. Collaboration and teamwork between clinician and client is integral to the healing process. The therapist and client work together to ensure the client’s needs are known and met.
